Petrol / Diesel mix

Postby colfw » Sat Jul 06, 2019 1:00 am

Hi all, a friend of mine accidentally put 5 Lt of unleaded 98 in his 2012 R51 2.5 diesel and was told by 2 workshops that it should not be a problem and just fuel right up, 80 Lt of diesel and double dose with a fuel conditioner.
He called RACQ and the mechanic said any petrol in a common rail diesel is not a good thing and suggested picking it up on a tilt tray as it had not been started and drain the tank and refuel with fresh diesel, [$225.00] and this is what he did.
Did I / he make the right decision, and how much petrol is too much for a common rail diesel?

I guess there is always "maybe it will be ok", or "my mate did it and it was fine."
For what it could have cost, sacrificing $225 seems like the best thing to do, all things considered.
Hope your "friend" is happy with this advice...
What did your friend do with the wasted fuel?

Hi NickJ, I don't know what happened to the contaminated fuel i guess the recovery truck received a top up of 40 Lt of high octane diesel for free.
