auto gear shift not moving

Postby Fender67 » Mon Jul 09, 2018 11:24 pm

I have a 2005 R51 ST-L with a diesel and auto. I cant move the gear lever out of PARK when pressing the button on the gear lever. The only way I can get it into gear is to push the lock button beside gear lever. I have my foot on the brake and can hear clicking just below the dash but no movement of gear lever. Once I have gotten the gear lever to Drive or Neutral or reverse its fine. i am wondering if there is a fuse that has blown or its a cable type thing that has broken at the lever end ? My local Nissan dealer wants $120 to do a diagnoistic test then charge for labour and parts but if its just a fuse or broken switch I can replace it myself. Thanks for any imput Paul.

Check that your brake lights are working. People have had problems with the brake pedal switch. With clicking, that sounds like it may be working, but it's worth a check.

I have this happen intermittently but it's not troubling me enough to pull it apart yet.
I find that mostly on cold mornings, the release is not activating when press the brake pedal. Usually with a few presses until I hear it click, it comes good. In my case I suspect the solenoid is sticking and probably just needs a some grease or graphite powder.

If you haven't got it sorted, the attached Service Manual extract details the diagnostic procedure.
There's a solenoid and a fuse involved.
As ImNotLost said, the brake circuit is involved.
I hope it helps.
