The dealer took the pathfinder to a diesel specialist who diagnosed the black smoke problem and replaced the piping around the turbo, no smoke and far more power :D also replaced ball joint at no cost to me.

I have a similar problem with a fair bit of black smoke from my 199,000km R51.

I will buy a new air filter tomorrow just to see if any improvement, vehicle had new injectors about a year ago, probably codes weren't updated but that didn't help you anyway.
Mechanic mentioned it might be the EGR valve but I haven't looked into that yet.
I have heard that blocking off the EGR improves torque, economy and reduces smoke, only for offroad use of course!

I think I will take it to the Diesel Doctor in Sydney if the filter doesn't help, they're not far from me.

Can I buy a fault interrogator box on ebay or somewhere for the R51?

Replaced the air filter, no improvement but now have a nice K&N filter fitted.

Diesel specialist recommended cleaning out the inlet manifold which I tried using a can of Liquimoly inlet cleaner but no improvement. didn't seem to have any effect even while doing it, no smoke or anything.
I have used an endoscope to look into the inlet manifold and it does look pretty carboned up still.
Would like to pull the manifold off to clean it but it looks like a pain in the butt to get it off, so much junk in the way.
May have to bite the bullet and do it though I am thinking of just pulling off the throttle body and using a bottle brush to give it a good clean out then just running the carbon out through the engine.

Any thoughts?

What about cleaning the MAP sensor too with a can of cleaner from supercheap?
That could be giving the ECU false readings.
